Preserving Records of Silenced Voices
— Rescuing footage from the immediate aftermath of the coup from a now-closed NHK website —
After the military coup in 2021, many people in Myanmar risked their lives to film what was happening and share the footage on social media. However, for security and other reasons, these videos have been steadily removed and lost.
The NHK website “What’s Happening in Myanmar?”, which had played an important role in preserving such material, was shut down in September 2025 following changes to the Broadcasting Act. In response to the disappointment and protests voiced by people in Myanmar, Docu Athan has obtained and decided to archive and make public a selection of footage same as what NHK had collected. These images mark the starting point of the events that later unfolded into the revolutionary movement and the civil war.
